Morgan Academy football player Alabama teen dies after head injury

An Alabama community is in mourning after the death of a high school quarterback who suffered a traumatic brain injury during the school’s season opener Friday night, according to statements from school officials and the teenager’s family.

Caden Tellier was taken to the hospital in critical condition after suffering a head injury in John T. Morgan Academy’s game against visiting Southern Academy, officials said Friday night, and was pronounced dead the next day.

Taylor was 16, according to CNN affiliate WSFA. According to a social media post by Michael McClendon, executive director of the Alabama Independent School Association, he suffered a traumatic brain injury. Officials did not share details about how Taylor was injured.

“Our boy, Caden Tellier, has met Jesus face-to-face,” Tellier’s parents said in a statement Saturday. “Everyone who knows Caden knows kindness, generosity and love, and true to his nature, he is giving of himself again and again.”

The school’s headmaster, Brian Oliver, confirmed that Tellier was an organ donor, AL.com reported.

“Lives have been affected by the way he lived and lives will be saved now by his passing,” his parents’ statement added.

Oliver called Tellier a shining light that graced the halls of the Selma, Alabama, private school.

“He was a student, a friend, an athlete and most importantly a follower of Christ. There are no words to describe what we are like as a school community and family,” Oliver said in a statement posted on social media. But how do you feel?

The Tellier family said a service will be scheduled soon. Morgan Academy school officials have suspended all school activities this week, according to the school association.

“It is with a heavy heart that I want to tell you that Caden Tellier has gone to be with his Lord and Savior. Caden loved the Lord with all his heart and was a shining light in the halls of Morgan Academy every day. “A student, a friend, an athlete and, most importantly, a follower of Christ,” Oliver said.

“There are no words to describe how we feel as a school community and family. We will come together and support Jamie, Ursila and Lyla wholeheartedly. We are proud Telliers. Our deepest sympathies also go out to the family. Thank you to all the schools and individuals who will never forget who Caden was and what he meant to Morgan Academy during this difficult time.”

Earlier on Saturday, confusion arose on social media about Tellier’s health when a statement from Alabama Independent School Association Executive Director Michael McLendon was posted on the association’s Facebook page. The initial statement, which came out just before noon ET, indicated that the school had suffered a “tragic loss” regarding Tellier.

However, the post was deleted and replaced with a new statement posted around 1:20 p.m. ET which clarified that Tellier had suffered a “tragic injury” and was in critical condition at the time. However, he died later that day.

McLendon added that the school is “suspending” all school activities for the coming week.

Tellier played both football and baseball for Morgan Academy. During his first year as a varsity starter as a sophomore in 2023, he threw for 1,228 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions in eight games. In baseball last spring, he hit .311 with two home runs and 10 RBI.

Tellier’s death comes just nine days after a fellow Alabama high school football player, 14-year-old New Brockton High School freshman Semaj Wilkins, died after collapsing during practice on Aug. 15.
