EXCLUSIVE: The story of The Acolyte will not continue, Lucasfilm has opted not to move forward with a second season of the Amandla Stenberg-starring Star Wars offshoot, sources tell Deadline.
Word of the decision comes more than a month after creator, director, executive producer and showrunner Leslie Headland completed the series’ eight-episode first season on Disney+.
The news is not entirely surprising. Acolyte did well with critics, with a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, but divided Star Wars fans, which was reflected in its overall viewership.
Fueled by interest in the venerable franchise, The Acolyte got off to a strong start when it launched with two episodes on June 4, ranking as the biggest series premiere on Disney+ this year in its debut on the streamer. The day generated 4.8M views. After five days of streaming, the number grew to 11.1 million globally. Confirming Disney’s data, the series debuted at No. 7 on Nielsen’s Top 10 original chart in its premiere week (488 million minutes watched), climbing to No. 6 the following week.
But The Acolyte couldn’t keep pace, dropping out of the top 10 in Week 3 and staying away before returning to No. 10 after the release of the finale (335M minutes, the lowest for a Star Wars series finale). are considered).
Like fellow global streamers Netflix and Prime Video, Disney+ has a high viewership threshold for renewing high-profile, big-budget series that cost more than $100M per season.
In interviews, Headland has revealed that he has offered his ideas for a second season and shared his hopes for a renewal.
