Max just got the big and best action movie of 2024 – and it’s 85% on Rotten Tomatoes
I’m not really into watching action movies, but when I find a movie that really surprises me, I’ll never forget it. One such gem includes “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” an epic, dystopian action movie that completely blew me away when I saw it in theaters a few months ago. It’s safe to say that I left the theater convinced that I had just seen the best action movie of the year.
“Furiosa” is a prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road,” focusing on the origin story of fierce warrior Furiosa. The film follows her journey from captive to becoming a key figure in the war against the ruthless warlord Amorton Joe, set against a backdrop of relentless, post-marital action. So as you can imagine, the idea of being able to watch it again, this time from the comfort of your own home, is too good to pass up.
Now, with its arrival on one of the best streaming services, I knew I had to dive back into the chaos. And let me tell you, “Furiosa” is not just a great action movie, but the best action movie of 2024. Here’s why you need to stream it now on Mac.
What is ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ about?
The film delves deep into the origins of the iconic character Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy), who became a fan favorite in “Fury Road.” The prequel takes us back to her early life, exploring how young Furiosa (Alyla Browne) is torn from her homeland as a child to a barbarian kingdom dominated by barbarian warriors. was thrown into a war-torn world. As she traverses a dystopian landscape filled with deadly enemies and ruthless factions, we see her harrowing journey of survival and resilience.
Furiosa’s path unfortunately leads her into the clutches of Dr. Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful leader who controls vast swathes of the desolate wasteland and wants to take over the gas supply. Immortal Joe (Lachie Hulme), another powerful figure, sparks an ongoing war, and Furiosa must survive several trials while finding her way home.
‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ is such a badass movie
If any movie is going to be crowned the ultimate “badass” this year, it will definitely be “Furiosa.” It’s a great action movie because of its relentless, fast-paced chase scenes and unique diesel-punk aesthetic. But, there is one scene in particular that made me laugh, and that was Furiosa’s “Stowaway to Nowhere” chase scene, which features a devastating barrage of death from guns, cars, and explosions. I won’t spoil too much – just know that this is my favorite scene in the entire franchise.
However, I have to give credit to Taylor-Joy’s portrayal of Furiosa, which is both fierce and delicate. She adds incredible depth to her role as a skilled warrior and determined survivor, even though she barely has a line in the film. Beyond the adrenaline-pumping action, the film manages to balance a fast-paced narrative with genuine emotion when it comes to Furiosa’s fight for freedom.
Of course, critics were also blown away by the film as they gave it a high score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes (and it deserves that rating due to its disappointing box office). Randy Myers from the San Jose Mercury News said: “It’s expertly shot, produced, edited, and directed, and it’s a breathless flick of action sequences. There’s also a pulse-pounding, metalized soundtrack alongside the Bose stack.”
Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly’s Christian Holob spoke of the smaller, more impressive emotional touches throughout the film: “Furiosa has the car chases and bikers swarming and flaming death, but an almost more impressive beauty. There are those little moments that you won’t find anywhere else.”
