Mariah’s relationship with her mother—from whom she inherited her vocal talents—was complicated throughout her life.
“Like so many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never just been black and white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions,” she wrote of her 2020 Written in Memoirs, Meaning of Mariah Carey.
“Our relationship is a barbed wire of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment,” Maria continued in the book. “A complicated love binds my heart to my mother.”
Despite their ups and downs, Maria maintains a close relationship with her mother. In 2010, they reunited for ABC’s Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You special and performed a festive mother-daughter duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus.”
Mariah also dedicated part of her memoir to Patricia. “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I believe truly did the best she could,” he wrote. “I will always love you best.”

Carey – who herself is mother to two children, twins Morocco and Monroe – has been opening up about her complicated relationship with her family. In her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the superstar recalled how her therapist once encouraged her to “literally change my family name and Fix it”: “My mom became my belly, Morgan my ex-brother and Alison my ex-sister … I expect them to miraculously become moms, big brothers and big sisters one day. “Had to leave what I envisioned,” he wrote.
“Ours is a story of betrayal and beauty,” Mimi adds of Patricia in the book. “I have freed myself from slavery many times, but there is a cloud of sadness that I suspect will always hang over me, not just because of my mother but because of our complicated journey together… Our relationship is a barbed wire of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, envy, admiration and despair. A complicated love binds my heart to my mother.”
